Turning EV Charging into a Revenue Opportunity for Golf Clubs

Introduction

Located in the heart of East Renfrewshire, just a short drive from Glasgow City Centre, Fereneze Golf Club offers a mature 18-hole moorland course spanning nearly 6,000 yards. The course is renowned for its spectacular views across the Clyde Valley, with panoramic vistas stretching towards Glasgow and, on clear days, as far as Ben Lomond.

As a forward-thinking club committed to enhancing its facilities, Fereneze recognised early the need to introduce EV charging infrastructure, driven by increasing EV adoption among its members and visitors.

The Challenge

Fereneze Golf Club had been exploring EV charging for over four years, recognising:

  • The growing impact of net zero targets
  • An increasing number of EVs in the club’s car park
  • The need to future-proof the club’s facilities

However, previous engagement with other suppliers had not progressed due to challenges in agreeing on a viable cost model for installation. The club needed a solution that was financially viable, scalable for future growth and that strategically aligned with the club’s long-term vision.

“We had been exploring EV charging for several years but had struggled to find a solution that worked commercially. The Connekt team took the time to understand our requirements and long-term vision, and there was clear alignment from the outset. Their site survey and recommendations ensured we could install the right solution using our existing power supply, while also identifying and securing funding. This made the decision straightforward for our Management Committee. The installation has provided a valuable additional benefit for our members and visitors, as well as creating a new revenue stream for the club.”

Bert Holt, Fereneze Golf Club

The Solution

Connekt worked closely with key stakeholders at the club, including the Club Secretary and Vice-Captain, to fully understand both immediate requirements and future ambitions.

The approach included:

  • Multiple consultation meetings to align on strategy
  • A detailed electrical site survey
  • Identification of an optimal charger location to minimise installation costs
  • A solution designed with future expansion

Following the site survey, Connekt identified that the existing power supply was sufficient to support:

  • 2 x 22kW AC fast charging units
  • 4 EV charging bays for members and visitors

The project was delivered through one of Connekt’s bespoke funding solutions. Connekt managed the full funding application process, secured approval, and oversaw the installation from start to finish creating a seamless, hands-off experience for the team. This made the decision to proceed straight forward for the club’s Management Committee.

The Impact

The installation has delivered both operational and commercial benefits:

  • Convenient EV charging for members and visitors
  • A new revenue stream for the club
  • Increased appeal to EV-driving golfers
  • Future-ready infrastructure aligned with net zero goals
  • A solution designed to support future growth

By introducing EV charging, Fereneze Golf Club has enhanced its offering while positioning itself as a modern, forward-thinking venue.
